Executive Video No-No's

First Things First

We seldom use the word 'no' when talking with clients and hesitate using it here, but these are things that clients say they have learned from their experience. We hope you find value in what they say.

1

No, you can't wing it!

We'll walk you through the pre-production process (think of it as the strategic plan) and produce a budget, book talent and equipment, and assemble the environment you need for a cost-effective shoot that gets the result you want.

2

No, you can't say 400 words per minute!
You wanted a 1-minute message. The average person understands 120 words per minute. If you free-wheel you will use two or three times the number of words required to make a point, and perhaps fail to make the point. Write what you need to say using 120 words for each minute of video.  Yes, it's hard to do.

3

No, editing won't fix a bad performance!
Yes, we cut the bloopers and use the do-overs. Yes, we let the camera run until you get it right. However, if you really want to make a point, and look good doing it, learn your lines before you face a camera. Performing for a camera is hard enough; trying to learn your lines while you do that is even harder. Professionals always rehearse beforehand.

4

No, you can't squeeze it in!
We schedule time to set-up and test before you arrive. Make-up is an optional cost (recommended), and will take 30 minutes (more if we're doing hair and wardrobe). When you're in front of the camera we'll take time to adjust lights and audio levels for your specific features. We'll do test shots until its right. You're there until we get the recording we came for, and yes it takes a long time.

5

No, editing won't fix a bad script!
Make time for your script writer; sign off before production day so you have time to rehearse. Say your script out loud so you know what it feels like.  If you have these fundamentals in place we can use your time on camera to polish your performance.

6

No, you can't read it off a teleprompter!
The operative word is 'prompt' not 'substitute' for performance. In fact, you should read a long script on a teleprompter. However, extemporaneous reading ( look it up ) is an acquired skill and you acquire it through rehearsal ( starting to see a pattern? ). A teleprompter and operator adds $600-$800 to your cost.

7

No, you can't change the script on set!
On-set script changes undo the value of rehearsing prior to the shoot day (you did rehearse, didn't you?). There is a reason why rock stars look and sound so good; they've rehearsed it hundreds of times beforehand.
